The home version of Dark Legacy throws in 24 secret characters, including the four from the original Gauntlet Legends.

There's a bit more depth to its world and combat system than before, as well. Dark Legacy appears to deliver plenty of space to run around in, and plenty of things to kill. Yes, you're still charging about whacking hordes of identical monsters while a sepulchral voice delivers dire intonations about how badly you need food, but hey, sometimes one simply wants to run around and kill things for a while. Of course, even taking into account the difficulty of developing on PS2, it's still a pretty sizable step ahead of Midway's 3DFX-based arcade systems, so in console form Dark Legacy runs without a hitch, and it doesn't look half-bad either.

Choppy arcade games tend to stand out, given the flexibility and power of arcade hardware, and Dark Legacy was no exception. Its visual quality was suspect, and the framerate was worse than the original Gauntlet Legends. I've played a fair bit of the arcade version of Dark Legacy, and fun was nowhere to be found - the game was very repetitive, as Gauntlet has always been, but more than that it was in serious technical trouble.
